Gipsy Bar

Ah, Gipsys, how I've missed your Friday night dance marathons and fabulous people watching.  Upon my return to Nairobi this week Gipsys was where I headed on Friday night to catch up with friends.  It was no different than I left it three months ago; there were the same faces, same music, same fun atmosphere.


Location: Westlands- Waiyaki Way at Woodvale Grove across from Barclays
Price: 200KSH (approx. $2.50) for beers; 500-600KSH (approx. $6.25-7.50) for mixed drinks
Atmosphere: Friday and Saturdays it's packed, loud, and full of dancing fools.  The rest of the week it's more laidback and you can catch a game from the sports bar on the end or grab a bite at the restaurant over the dance floor on the other end.

They boast three themed bars and one restaurant under one roof so everyone can find their own niche.  When you walk in and turn to your right the sports bar is at the far end.  Next to that is the lounge that tries to class it up and doesn't serve any local beers.  They will even ask you to move or pour your beer into a glass if you are drinking Tusker or Pilsner in their designated section.  This is also one of the few places in Nairobi I've found that sells shisha.  I've never quite figured out what the theme of the center bar is supposed to except an entrance to the restaurant that sits above the dance floor at the far left.  I haven't tried the aptly named Barfly restaurant, but it always seems to be full.  On weeknights and early evenings before the dj gets going they also sometimes host various bands.  It's not everyone's cup of tea, but Gipsys is one of the hottest nightspots in Nairobi and definitely worth checking out.
